Turmeric is the rhizome of Curcuma longa. Fresh or ground, it colours rice, sauces, soups and marinades while adding an earthy, mildly bitter flavour.
Cooking with turmeric
- Warm powder gently with aromatics without burning it.
- Grate fresh rhizome into sauce or drinks.
- Pair with ginger, garlic and pepper.
- Protect clothes and counters from stains.
Start with half a teaspoon for several portions and taste.
Evidence and safety
NCCIH says evidence is insufficient for definitive health conclusions. Highly bioavailable supplements are not equivalent to food and may carry risks, including liver injury. Seek advice with medication, pregnancy or illness.
