How to read an African food label: a practical buying guide

Ingredients, allergens, storage and directions: checks that prevent mistakes.

A front-of-pack photograph is not enough to choose a product. Packages with similar names may differ in composition, processing or preparation. Confirm the online product page against the label you receive.

Six useful checks

  • Exact product name and ingredient list.
  • Emphasised allergens and possible traces.
  • Net weight, date and lot number.
  • Origin or place of production when stated.
  • Storage conditions before and after opening.
  • Preparation, dilution or cooking directions.

Comparing intelligently

  1. Compare price per kilogram or litre, not only pack price.
  2. For peanut paste, check sugar, oils and salt against the intended use.
  3. For leaves, distinguish fresh, frozen, dried and already pounded.
  4. For fish, check species, salting, smoking and possible bones.

Practical tip

If a web page and package differ, use the received label to guide handling and report the discrepancy to the seller.

FAQ

What if information is unreadable?

Do not guess, especially for allergens or cooking directions. Ask the seller for a clear photograph or confirmation.
