Menthol is a terpene derivative.
It is traditionally used as a respiratory antiseptic.
Menthol activates at low doses the nerve receptors sensitive to cold present in the nasal vestibule and in the upper airways, thus providing a feeling of freshness and improved breathing and decongestion.
Locally, it is rubefacient and revulsive. The activity of menthol is exerted on the nerve endings of the skin.
