According to LADISINSKY (1975) in SEMCHEDDINE (1990), the chickpea probably originated in the Near East (southeast of Turkey, Syria).
DUKE (1981) reports that this dried vegetable conquered Europe during the Middle Ages after the crusaders rediscovered it in the Middle East. But its cultivation and consumption have in fact been attested by written and archaeological sources, well before at least the 9th century.
